La banda gástrica ajustable se coloca en la parte alta del estómago de 3 a 5 cms por debajo de la unión del esófago con el estómago, creando un fenómeno como de reloj de arena, y al llegar los alimentos a la parte alta del estómago, se detienen por el estrechamiento que ocasiona la banda permitiendo que el alimento pase más lento y se tenga sensación de plenitud con poca cantidad.

La banda gástrica a diferencia de los otros procedimientos es sencilla de colocar, no requiere cortes en el estómago o en los intestinos y además es reversible. El tiempo de hospitalización también es corto siendo de 1 día en promedio.

Se han colocado mundialmente más de 100,000 bandas gástricas en el mundo desde el año 1996 en Latinoamérica y otros países y desde el 2001 en los EUA. Las marcas varían clasificándose por nuestro grupo en bandas duras y suaves con características individuales dependiendo de la marca.

La cantidad de bandas que se han colocado mundialmente han permitido hacer muchos estudios de seguimiento en estos pacientes y compararlo con otros métodos como el By Pass, la derivación biliopancreática y mas recientemente con la Manga G ástrica. Los resultados han sido variables y desgraciadamente no reproducibles por igual en todos los centros hospitalarios, arrojando como conocimiento que el paciente con banda tiene alrededor de 40% de complicaciones desde mediano a largo plazo, con perdida de peso variable y solamente sostenida por rigurosos planes de ejercicio y dieta. Además la constante necesidad de ajustes a la banda también ocasiona otras problemáticas. Este procedimiento tiene Ventajas y Desventajas. Con todo esto el paciente deberá de entender que el uso de la banda gástrica no soluciona todos los problemas y es solo un coadyuvante en el tratamiento de la obesidad, por lo cual el caso siempre se deberá abordar en forma adecuada y la decisión dependerá de las expectativas del paciente, su perfil psicosocial y una adecuada asesoría por el equipo de especialistas. De cualquier forma debemos recordar que no hay cirugía para adelgazar capaz de tener resultados perdurables si las personas no cambian sus hábitos alimentarios y hacen ejercicio

The Adjustable gastric band is a silicon ring that we apply by surgery in the upper segment of the stomach (3 to 5 centimeters) under the sphincter union from the esophagus and the stomach, looking as a sand clock, and when the food goes to the top of the stomach is stopped because the union is little by the band lending the food pass slowly and have a full sensation with few quantity.

Gastric band is differentiated with other procedures. Is easy to add, doesn’t requires to cut the stomach or intestines and it is reversible. The hospital post-surgery staying is usually 1 day, because the patient has a rapid recovery and just only a little surgical trauma.

With all that quantity of Band surgeries practiced in the world, lend to follow the progress in the patients and being compared with the Gastric By Pass, biliopancreatic diversion and most recently the Gastric Sleeve.

The results have been different and unfortunately not reproducible in an equal percentage in the Hospital Centers, showing that the patients has 40% of different complications in a medium and long time, with variable weight loosing and rigorously ditched by exhaustive sport plans and diets. And the constant adjustable necessities have other problems.

With all this information the patient must understand that the use of the Gastric Band doesn’t have all the solutions and is a helper of the obesity treatment, by the way, the case always aboard in a right form and the final answer depends on the patient expectative, his or her psychosocial profile and an adequate guide by the specialist team. However, we must remember that if we want to loose weight as we expect with excellent results, we need to change our food habits and do some exercise.
